The Glass Behind the Smartphone

Gorilla Glass is rarely talked about and if most people were asked what it was they would have no idea. The interesting thing is that millions of people use this product in their everyday lives. Gorilla Glass is the glass that protects our beloved smartphones from the wear and tear brought on by everyday life. If you have ever wondered why the glass cover on your phone can survive your key filled pockets or purses, it is because of this highly durable glass. Of course, a good screen protector or cell phone case would better the longevity of a phone, but it is amazing how resilient the glass is.

Gorilla Glass was created in the 60’s with no clear use or purpose. When the creator, Corning, heard about the smartphone he went straight to Steve Jobs and proudly showed off his Gorilla Glass. He put the glass in a bag full of keys and pulled it out without a single scratch. From then on Apple has been purchasing the product and is the highest consumer of the glass. It is amazing to think that Gorilla Glass was created forty years before it was relevant and since has turned into a 250 million dollar industry.
