What Is The Difference Between TPU, Rubberized, and Silicone Cases?
Okay so you might be wondering what is the difference between TPU, silicone, and rubberized cases? They all sound like soft cases that you put on your phone, right? Why do they have different names?
Indeed, they are all protective cases that slip over your phone. But they are not exactly the same. They are made from different materials and have different properties. Let’s take a closer look at each one.
Silicone cases are made from silicone rubber. Silicone cases are the most flexible of the three types of cases. TPU cases are close second, because they are soft enough to fold and twist slightly. But silicone cases are so soft, that you can fold, twist, and crumple them with the greatest of ease.
Silicone cases also grip to surfaces. So when you set your silicone encased phone on a desk or surface, it remains in place. If you were to bump it, let’s say with your elbow, it would not slide across the surface and fall to the floor.
Silicone cases are water resistant, so you can clean them quickly when they become dirty. They are also resistant to shock, scratches, and heat. If you were to leave a silicone case in a car on a hot day, it would not become hot to the touch.
Rubberized cases sound like they are made from rubber. But they are not. They are actually made from hard plastic. They are called “rubberized” because they undergo a special treatment process that gives them a soft rubber-like texture. Think of it as putting a lot of frosting on a frozen cake. The top is soft, but the foundation is tough and solid.
Since they are tough, solid, and rigid, rubberized cases do not bounce when they fall to the floor. So there is less of a chance of your phone landing on its screen. They are also much more resistant to scratches than the softer cases.
TPU cases are made of “thermoplastic polyurethane”. Which is a big and fancy word to describe a combination of plastic and silicone rubber. We’ve learned that rubberized cases are made of plastic, and silicone cases are made of silicone rubber. TPU cases are made from both. That’s why TPU cases are relatively sturdy and also somewhat flexible.
TPU cases are smooth, they do not have as much grip as silicone and rubberized cases. And this a bit of a trade off. They still grip to surfaces, but not as much. However, TPU slide in and out of your pocket much easier. This allows you to access your phone faster.
Because of their rubber-like structure, TPU cases bounce when they fall to the ground. The bounce absorbs the shock damage caused by the collision with the ground. This prevents the damage from transferring to your device. TPU cases are also resistant to oil, grease, and dust.
Well, that is very difficult to say. Each type of case offers its own set of benefits. There really isn’t one that is better than the others. It is all a matter of what you personally prefer.
If you work at a desk and set your phone next to you, a silicone case will be less likely to slip and fall.
If you want your device to be as slim as possible, a rubberized hard shell is the closest to your phones original shape.
And if you drop your phone often, a TPU case will work best against falls.
